JL Simpson Middle School
For many of our students, AVID is a safe place. Many of our students do not receive much support at home for academics. Several of these students have also experienced many hardships for their age.
Two years ago we had one boy in our AVID class whose mom was sick with cancer. This year, we have his brother. The mom passed away a few months ago. Things have been hard for them lately at home. AVID has provided them with a school family.
We also have a student this year whose parents are going through a divorce. Once, again, she can count on her AVID family during this difficult time.
Taking this field trip is the stepping stone to building a foundation of trust and lasting friendships. These students remain friends throughout high school as they continue on with the AVID program.
